Canoa Waorani Handwoven Basket

$92.00

The Waorani Handwoven Basket is made by hand by members of the Waorani people, who live deep in the heart of the Amazon region of Ecuador. These baskets are created for household use and as a traditional art form. The organic materials used are carefully harvested only from trees that have died and fallen naturally, to prevent deforestation of the rainforest. The artisans do not often sell their products, as money is not used commonly in their communities for daily life. They are also very cautious to open up to outsiders, aware of the precious way of life that they are actively preserving. This, along with the fact that only a few thousand Waorani remain among the population, makes these products particularly rare to find!
