Kichwa Mocahua Ceramic Bowl (Medium) – Manturu

$46.00

Every part of this piece is astounding. The mocahua (moh-KAH-wah) is a ceramic bowl used by the Kichwa to serve chicha, a fermented drink made from yuca. The materials include pure local clay collected from the riverbanks, organic paints made from various soils, and a resin finish glaze extracted from trees. The clay is shaped by hand, without using a mold or pottery wheel, and fired in a wood burning kiln. Every design is one of a kind, and is meticulously painted using a small brush made of human hair. Each of these bowls carry a story of their own!

The story this piece carries and tells is spectacular. Powerful ancestral roots guide the designs you find in each piece, which go back to the very foundations of the tribe. Children from the different Kichwa communities learn the art by watching their elders gathering clay from the nearby rivers, using their hands to shape and mold the clay, and create each unique piece. They gather together, sharing stories, teaching one another and listening to one another – all of this happening as the bowls are slowly and carefully created.

Each piece can take a full day or more to create. From gathering the materials from natural sources, to forming the bowl, painting, firing, and applying glaze – the process takes many hours to complete. The tools used typically include coconut shells for sculpting, human hair for paint brushes, stones for texturing, and other materials found in the natural environment.

Uses: There is no space where these bowls will not fit perfectly. They can turn any corner of your home into a space that tells a powerful story. They can be used to decorate any area – whether it’s your bathroom, a nightstand, the middle of your dining table, a coffee table, delicately placed on a bookshelf… the options are endless! They can be used as small serving bowls, or to hold jewelry and other items. Or even brighten up a bathroom as a soap dish. They are made to be used and to bring beauty wherever they are placed.
